Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away in the role of a carnival barker as a young girl and she was forced to provide for the family by working as a cook and server. Ruth went to school in the tenement district of Boston's most deprived. She left school after two years, to go into acting. The path was difficult to take. While she was offered an interview in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine, no theatre jobs came her way. The next position she was offered was the "hat check" girl for a nightclub before she gave up and returned to Boston. She was an usherette in the mornings and was a part of the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first ever permanent acting job. Her studies in drama led her to receive a degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
